Continuous new products are one of the most critical factors for a company to develop continuously, so it is essential to have the ability to develop new products. Besides, as companies are known to be highly profitable at brand premiums, more and more companies are turning to original products.

The process of product development is mysterious and responsible for many people. You might hear stories like Steve Jobs created the iPhone, Elon Masters Created Tesla, and so on. These are great companies and exceptional products that rely on huge R & D teams and supply chains. We don’t have to be afraid of new product development, but most companies focus more on consumer goods. Through small function innovation, appearance design, and product quality improvement, we can develop market-friendly products.

In this article, I’ll use the consumer electronics case to help you solve the problem of finding the right supplier in China to develop a new product.

Why is it essential to develop and produce a new product?

In this section, I will tell you why it is essential to develop new products in three aspects: Product Life Cycle, providing value to customers, and the survival and development of the company.

Product is at the maturity stage of the product life cycle

As you can see from the images above, a product lifecycle. The product life cycle is divided into five stages: Development, Introduction, Growth, Maturity, and Decline. When a product launch, sales will go up as the marketing team pushes the product into a growth phase by promoting and marketing campaign. However, the growth phase doesn’t last indefinitely, and the end product goes through maturity and decline. Finally, the product will drop out of the market as sales decline. What is the best time to develop a new product? The answer is that older products are just reaching maturity stage. At this time start it, new product development to release the time is just the end of the old product maturity, the perfect convergence on the latest and old product replacement. Then, it is vital to have iterations of new products and to keep the company’s business flowing.

Ability to provide customer value and “Aha “Moment

Echeers attends the Hong Kong electronics show every year. Through the exhibition, we know from around the world wholesalers, distributors, and supermarkets procurement. They came out here to look for new products. Instead, it’s about finding suppliers who have the skills to develop new products because this kind of supplier can help them realize the new product development.

Our client is one of the largest wholesalers in the Netherlands and specializes in the gift market. Many large companies customize gifts with their logo for their customers, and the order can reach 20K, or even 50K. Big companies like these don’t want their customers to get commercially available gifts, they prefer to open up their models and give them a moment. As a wholesaler, the ability to quickly and accurately achieve customer-designed products, and to make mass production is they provide the value of large customers. It’s also successful access to significant projects killer mace.

There is also a higher demand for supermarkets because they are dealing with retail customers. How to let the customer every time to the supermarket can feel the freshness? The new product proportion is the most important. Therefore, the purchase of supermarkets will introduce new brands products every year, more and more prefer to develop their supermarket’s brand products. Because they have a mature sales channel, high-quality private brank product would be followed by the growth of sales and brand recognition and improvement.

So whether you’re a wholesaler, a supermarket purchase, or a brand, new product development can bring you great value.

The company continues to exist and develop

New Product Development allows the company to continue to survive and grow. Here I would like to introduce the Chinese brand Xiaomi. Xiaomi is a company that tells us how important it is for a company to keep innovating and keep developing new products. Xiaomi was officially founded in April 2010, when its products consisted only of smartphones. Eight years later, Xiaomi went public in Hong Kong, proving that the company is growing fast. Many people want to know the reason why Xiaomi is growing so fast. I think there are many reasons for Xiaomi’s success, but the most important one is that they are consistently innovative, with a steady stream of high-quality new products coming to market, allowing Xiaomi’s brand value to continue to be magnified among its customers. Nowadays, Xiaomi has built its ecosystem from home appliances, smartphones, phones accessories, and so on.

6 steps to complete new product development and production

We now know that developing new products is critical to the survival and growth of the company. There are risks in starting the development process, and you need to be aware of each step and know the right approach to help you plan for new product development.
We will explain the 6 steps to complete the R & D and manufacturing process of new products. It will give you advice on how to create the best development team and manage a development project.

Step 1: Product idea and research

Before developing a new product, you need to know what kind of new product you want to develop? When you have a product idea, but don’t know if there is a similar product or if a better idea has come up. There are two websites that I recommend to you Kickstarter and Indiegogo. On both sites, you can search for thousands of new product crowdfunding, and different innovations in the same category can give you more inspiration to define your new product. Crowdfunding is also a great way to test market feedback before launching a product. We developed the Dancebot , a smart dance speaker, and we chose Kickstarter to crowdfund. It is funded in two hours, which gave us high confidence. Dancebot is one of our top-rated products. Dancebot is one of our top-rated products.

When you have a product idea, we still need to verify whether our idea meets the market demand. Product validation ensures that you don’t waste too much energy, money, and time on a product idea that you can’t sell.

Here are 5 tips that might help:
1. Research online requirements using Google Trend
2. Star an online survey to get feedback
3. Thoroughly discuss with your customers and channel members
4. Ask your supplier if the product idea can be realized at the expected cost
5. Start crowdfunding projects to validate market feedback, such as kickstart and Indiegogo.

Step 2: Product Design

Once you’ve done your research and identified product idea, the next step is to identify the product design. We all know that good product design is half the battle. We recommend that you find a local designer to create your product. For example, if your product is sold in the United States, then you should find an American industrial designer to create your product so that the design of the product will meet the American aesthetic. We believe that similar products, the United States, Europe, and China’s aesthetic is the vast difference. You need to fully communicate with the designer about the size of the product, what’s the materials, such as plastic, metal or silicone, and what it will look like when combined with the product’s features. After that, let the designers do their own thing.

In this section, you must not think of looking for a graphic designer design to do it, and the manufacturer can develop the product with a draft. They need a design STP document to evaluate the product structure, especially the electronic products which need to determine whether the internal components can have enough space emissions. If this is not possible, you need to modify the design. So it requires designers to understand industrial design and CAD drawing. Dancebot as an example, our target market is the United States and Europe, so we hired the German Red Dot award-winning designers to help us design the appearance of products.

Step 3: Function & Specification & Pricing

In this step, you first provide the design and functional details of the product to the manufacturer. In the case of consumer electronics, a professional manufacturer will evaluate the functionality based on the information you provide. After the confirmation function is realized, the combination of the designed STP file confirms whether the internal structure of the product needs to be modified. In general, it is necessary to combine the internal parts of the emission position to adjust, such as the button, light position, sound hole, and so on.

The professional manufacturer should provide you a product development plan that includes functional details, the timing of hardware and software development, preliminary product specifications, and a BOM for the initial product evaluation. Consumer electronics involves the construction of hardware and software, and it will take about four to eight weeks, depending on the complexity of the product. Preliminary product specifications can help you to confirm whether the final product and design, such as product size, material selection, and so on. The estimated BOM table can help you determine whether the product price is competitive in the market. If a product is perfect, but it’s too expensive, then it’s still a failure product. So this step is significant to help you determine whether or not to develop the product explicitly.

Step 4: Prototype

When the final design is decided, and the functional development of the product is completed, we can use 3D printing technology to help us make a prototype. Features can help you test multiple versions, eliminate unsatisfied items, and make improvements until you are satisfied with the sample. This process can avoid the mold open wrong or modify and lead to huge losses.

Step 5: Tooling

When Prototype has reached a satisfactory level of appearance and functionality, the next step is to open the mold. The mold of general product divides into the plastic mold, metal mold, silicon mold, and PVC mold, and so on. According to the product material selection open different mold. A professional manufacturer has a mold suppliers system and can control the quality of his products and follow-up mass production process smoothly.

Step 6: Production

A proper manufacturer should have perfect production SOP and QC system to ensure the production of high-quality products. A new product will go through three stages: pilot run, sealed sample, and mass production.

•Pilot Run—– Before mass production, the pilot run is a crucial step to ensure the quality, the engineers from different departments would conduct the assessment during the whole process, identify the potential questions and improve the assembling efficiency. Individual product SOP will be formed as well.

•Sealed Sample—– After the pilot run, with the advanced preparation, the manufacturer is confident to make you a sealed sample for testing and approval.

•Mass production—– With sealed sample approved, it’s ready for your orders! Get ready to receive your goods.
